5G Technology

5G technology aims to enhance the way we use our phones and our smart technology.

If you’re out and about with no access to WiFi, making use of a 5G network is the best way to get back online. It’s the 5th generation of mobile broadband, being more powerful and faster than 3 or 4G.

Speed

Although it is not yet available in Malta, with 5G it is possible to get a connection that is 100 times faster than other wireless networks or wired connections, which makes 5G network speed the fastest.

In real terms this means that 5G download speed makes your favourite movies able to be streamed straight to your phone in a matter of seconds, even if they are in HD 8K quality. Once it is introduced in Malta, it will be notices that the difference between 4G and 5G speed is quite significant.

4G vs 5G

Speed: If you’re looking at 5G vs 4G, what is noticed first is that download speed is much greater. It is possible to stream, share and download many more data-heavy files such as high-resolution videos and audio, much faster. Once in Malta you’re looking at a 10% difference in download times between 4G and 5G.

Capacity: 5G also makes it possible to get online more easily in busy, high-traffic areas. That’s because of the difference in frequency bands between 5G and 4G. 5G uses much higher frequencies as opposed to other networks, which makes its signal harder to be interfered with. Therefore, with 5G phones, there’ll be no more stressing at an event that you can’t get on Whatsapp to find your family or friends.

5G Compatible Phones

Once 5G is up and running in Malta, not all phones will be able connect to 5G internet, so you’ll need to make sure you’ve got a 5G compatible phone.

The bad news for iPhone fans is that there isn’t an Apple 5G offering yet, however, there are rumours that we’ll be seeing one later this year.

Currently, there are a few Android 5G phones on the market, although from quite a small number of providers and with Samsung 5G phones being the most talked about, and these are:

  • The Galaxy S10
  • The Galaxy S20
  • The Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • The Galaxy Note 10 Plus

There’ll surely be plenty more 5G phones for 2020 though, and we’ll definitely keep you updated.

5G at Home

Once 5G comes to Malta, it will be possible to get set up at home as well with 5G home internet.

5G home internet is wireless, meaning all you need is a 5G router or otherwise known as a 5G home hub to get connected. By simply plugging it in you can get used to super-fast speeds. This makes 5G installation very easy and much less time consuming compared to most traditional home internet connections.
